Chiminea.....fun to have but be careful!

8/23/2022 (Permalink)

Do you have a chiminea, a fire pit or an outside fireplace at your home?  More and more homeowners are enjoying socializing around a fire……something that not too long ago, other than an old fashion campfire, was restricted to indoor fireplaces or woodburning stoves.  As more homeowners are buying portable fire pits and having outdoor fireplaces built, the need to be vigilant with fire safety is critical.

Common sense rules the day when it comes to fires.  Don’t leave fires unattended, don’t leave them under the guidance of a child, contain the flame so embers do not fly off into dry grass, mulch or rooftops, always extinguish when done, and never throw hot embers into a trash receptacle. Common sense, right?  We all would think so, but every year unintended fires take lives, destroy homes, and damage the land because someone was careless or just simply not thinking.

So, to keep you loved ones and your home safe from fire while enjoying your patio fireplace, always use common sense and err on the side of caution.

Should the unfortunate occur, and a fire strike, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.

What's Going On In My Dryer Vent?

8/15/2022 (Permalink)

Dryer vent fires are really do happen.  They may not be something you hear about much, but they occur more than one may think.  Customers often ask, “how did this happen, I clean out my dryer lint trap all the time?”  And cleaning out the lint trap is a good thing, but only half the equation.  Your car runs on gasoline and needs oil…..one of the two is not enough.  Same with your dryer.  You need to clean out the lint trap as well as the exhaust hose.  The exhaust hose is the piece of the equation that most people forget and is the main culprit when it comes to dryer related fires.  If you would like to clean the exhaust hose yourself, simply pull the dryer out from the wall, disconnect the venting hose, shake out the big clumps of lint and proceed to vacuum out the hose.  Depending on the amount of dryer use, to be on the safe side, cleaning should be done twice a year.  And never leave your home with the dryer going.

Should you experience a fire due to a clogged dryer vent, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.  We can be reached 24/7, 365 days a year.

Electricity....Yes, Please. Fire....No Thanks!

10/19/2021 (Permalink)

Sticks and stones may not break your bones, but fire will hurt you!  Think of all the plugs, extension cords, and surge protectors that todays’ households use to facilitate the use of computers, phone chargers, TV’s, and a host of other electronics that we couldn’t have even dreamed of 20 years ago.  And with all these electronics, can be the over utilization of electrical outlets.  Older homes were not designed or electrically wired to handle the load of todays electronics.  Then, multiply these electronics by the number of people within a home, and the strain on the system becomes exponentially more concerning.  The result in many cases: electrical fires.  Unlike kitchen fires, electrical fires often “simmer” inside walls without anyone noticing until they combust into a large-scale fire that is already within the  infrastructure of the home.

If your outlets spark when you plug appliances or electronics in, this is a problem.  If you notice the electrical power in your home arc and dim when electronics are plugged in and out, this too is a sign of electrical weakness.  If you smell anything odd and rather metallic in nature, it may be your electrical wiring.  Be proactive and have your home checked by a certified electrician if any of these symptoms occur or you notice anything else of concern.

Should the unfortunate occurrence of a fire take place, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800 for all your fire remediation needs.  We are certified, licensed and trained in Fire restoration.

Holiday Decorations Already?

8/17/2021 (Permalink)

Have you been in the stores lately?  It’s hard to believe but Christmas decorations are already up and displayed and aisles are brimming with holiday wrap and festive items.  Although perhaps a bit early to be hanging the stockings on the fireplace mantel, it is never too early to be prepared for fire safety.  In the winter months, many households have Christmas trees strung with lights, outdoor displays of lights and decorations requiring extension cords and outlets.  Chimneys are aflame with burning wood, giving the home that winter feel and smell that is welcome in the cold winter months.  But before all these activities commence, check and make sure you are prepared.  Is your chimney flue open and the chimney free of debris or any bird nests that may have been built over the previous summer?  Are your electrical cords and outlets in good shape and capable of handling the load you will be placing on them?  Is there a safety screen, or glass doors in front of your fireplace?  If a gas fireplace, has it been serviced and checked for leaks in the past several years? You can never be to cautious when it comes to fire safety.  Check and double check, to make sure you and your family are safe and can sleep soundly at night without the fear of fire.

Should the unfortunate occurrence of fire happen, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.  We are trained, licensed, and knowledgeable about fire remediation and restoration.  Give us a call 24/7 and we will be there to take care of your needs.

Fires, Fires, Everywhere

8/10/2021 (Permalink)

There is no escaping the tragic news over the past few years about the vast wild fires not only on the west coast of the united states but across Europe and Australia too.  The summer of 2020 saw an unprecidented level of fire destruction in California.  At SERVPRO of Fair Oaks, Centreville, Chantilly, we had a call from a friend that was living near Paradise, California.  They were fortunate that the fires were contained before it reached their home, but the smoke made its way into the house.  Well, you can guess what's next......a stinky, smelling, house, to include the clothing in the closests, carpets, furniture.....you name it, it smelled.  After cleaning and airing out the house as much a possible, they were still left with a strong smokey smell.  They gave us a call to see what to do and who they could call.  We were able to hook them up with another SERVPRO in California and they could not be happier.  No more smelly house!

So, if the unfortunate fire/smoke happens to you or your family, please give us a call and we'll be there every step of the way to help.  SERVPRO of Fair Oaks, Centreville, Chantilly (703) 830-5800.

Watch Where You Place That Fire Pit!

4/29/2021 (Permalink)

What is the popular patio/deck item these days? Fire Pits!  Everywhere you turn, there is some retail establishment, either brick-and-mortar, or an internet outfit, selling fire pits.  It’s hard to argue with the fact that they produce a pretty, soothing evening, watching the embers glow and flames flickering against the night sky.  But along with the good times, comes responsibility.  Do not leave your fire pit unattended, do not call it a night and leave it roaring, and never end the evening without the fire out and the lid placed on top.  Another good safety tip……..unless you have your fire pit on a brick, stone, or concrete patio, it’s best not to have one.  Placing a fire pit on a wooden deck is simply inviting a potential disaster.  SERVPRO of Chantilly recently conducted a fire remediation job at a home where the fire stated on the wooden screened in porch and made it’s way into the adjoining family room.

Hopefully such a fire never happens, but if it does, do not hesitate to call us on (703) 830-5800.  We’ll get you back to a smoke-free, smell-free home in not time!

SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly was able to restore the kitchen to it's former condition and a lesson was learned on the appropriate use of deep frying appliances.

Don't Let That Tree Take You Up In Smoke

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

It’s that time of year again…..the holidays!  Although a bit different in 2020 then in previous years, with fewer gatherings and families apart over the holidays rather then being together.  One thing remains the same; people love to decorate Christmas trees.  Each holiday season untold house fires are the result of hot lights or popping embers from the fireplace, catching a dry Christmas tree up in flames.  So, before this happens, take precautions.

If you have a live Christmas tree in your home, make sure it is well watered.  Check to ensure the lights are not hot and the wires and plugs are in good shape.  Keep your tree far enough away from your fireplace to prevent sparks or embers from popping out onto the tree.  Have a working fire extinguisher handy and review your family escape plan should a fire occur.

Should the unfortunate event of a house fire take place, first and foremost get out of the house.  Call the fire department and stay back away from the home.  Once contained and cleared for reentry, which could be days, call your insurance company and SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.  We are Fire remediation and restoration experts and can help put your home back together.  We have training, knowledge, and experience, but most importantly, we have compassion and understand what you are going through.  Should you need our services, call us today on (703) 830-5800.

Don't Let Smoke Stink Up Your Home!

8/11/2020 (Permalink)

We often have clients say, "the fire wasn't bad and it was quickly contained; so why do we have so much damage?" The answer is an easy one: SMOKE

Delays in the clean-up after a fire can also add to the difficulty associated with smoke remediation. The longer the  permeation of smoke remains in your home, the further it penetrates into walls, carpets, furniture, draperies, etc. The key to successful smoke remediation is to act quickly and professionally.  Once you are allowed back into your home, call your SERVPRO professional.  SERVPRO teams are trained in the latest techniques and products to rid your home of that unwanted smoke odor. And nobody wants their home to smell like a wet campfire the morning after a BBQ.  So don't delay, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800 and get back into you home sooner, rather than later.  We’ll have you smelling fresh and clean again.

Are Your Eyes Playing Tricks On You, Or Is That Really Smoke?

8/10/2020 (Permalink)

Have you ever seen what you thought was steam rising from the garden beds around a house?  Did you rub your eyes, shake your head, and take a double look?  It may not have been steam or your eyes playing tricks on you but smoldering mulch.  At SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly, a recent client experienced just this.  Unfortunately, the mulch did ignite, burning through the bay window and damaging the kitchen.  Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the damage was not too extensive.  It’s often debated whether mulch can spontaneously ignite or if it has to have a catalyst such as a spark, hot ember or discarded cigarette to catch fire.  Regardless of which side of the debate you favor, summertime warrants taking extra care with respect to BBQ’s, fireworks, fire pits, citronella candles, and all the other activities that entail fire.  Should a flame, spark, hot match, or 4th of July sparkler land in a garden bed of mulch, you may be soon looking at a serious fire.  Be safe, take precautions, and protect your family and property from unnecessary fire damage.

Should the unfortunate occur, and your home sustains fire and smoke damage, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.  We are fire restoration experts and are here to help.

That Darn Lawn Mower!

8/10/2020 (Permalink)

Heat and chemicals don’t always play nice together!  We recently helped a client with a garage rebuild after a fire.  Although the fire department was not 100 % sure which chemical products that were in the garage reacted to create the fire, they do know that one of the culprits was gasoline and a hot lawn mower.  Lesson from this experience is to always let your mower cool down outside before putting it away in a confined space like a garage.  In this case, the garage was small, hot, and obviously contained fertilizer, gas cans, paint, oil, cleaning solutions, etc.  How things somehow touch each other or ignite in the air, can sometimes be a mystery but what is not a mystery is the fact that summertime garage fires happen.  Should this happen to you, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800 and we can remediate your fire damage and our rebuild team get you back to new in no time.

Dryer Vent Fire.....Really....Is That a Thing?

Dryer vent fires are really a "thing" that happens.

Is Your Home Electrically Sound?

8/28/2019 (Permalink)

Sticks and stones may not break your bones, but fire will hurt you!  Think of all the plugs, extension cords, and surge protectors that todays’ households use to facilitate the use of computers, phone chargers, TV’s, and the host of other electronics that we couldn’t have even dreamed of 20 years ago.  And with all these electronics, comes the over utilization of electrical outlets.  Older homes were not designed or electrically wired to handle the load of todays' electronics.

If you notice the electrical power in your home arcs and dims when electronics are plugged in and out, this too is a sign of electrical weakness.

Don't Let Those Yule-Time Logs Spark a Fire!

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

Watch for Popping Sparks

It’s getting to be that time of year again when family and friends gather around the fireplace.  On a cold night, it’s cozy, warm, and mesmerizing to have a nice fire going.  But don’t get complacent and call it a night with a roaring fire still burning.  Embers can pop and land several feet outside the fireplace if the screen or doors are open.  Should these embers catch a rug, newspaper, couch, etc., on fire, the entire room could go up in smoke, and possibly the whole house.  Don’t take any chances with your family’s safety and the integrity of your home.  Always close the fireplace doors should you leave the room and make sure the fire is out prior to falling asleep for the night.

Should the unfortunate occur and you need assistance after a fire, call SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly on (703) 830-5800.  Our phone is answered 24/7, 365 days a year.  We are fire and smoke remediation specialists and can take care of any fire damage that has occurred.

9/14/2018 (Permalink)

So don't delay, call SERVPRO and get back into you home sooner, rather than later.

Careful use of Deep Fryers is a must!

8/29/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly recently took on the clean up and restoration of a fire damaged kitchen.  What was the cause of the fire? None other than a deep fryer.  Splattering oil caught a kitchen towel on fire.  In a panic, the homeowner knocked over the deep fryer causing the fire to engulf the kitchen.  Luckily, injuries were avoided and the fire was soon contained by the fire department.

SERVPRO was able to restore the kitchen to it's former condition and a lesson was learned on the appropriate use of deep frying appliances.
