Make Sure Your Winter Wonderland Doesn't Include a House Fire!

Have you been in the stores lately?  It’s hard to believe but Christmas decorations are already up and displayed and aisles are brimming with holiday wrap and festive items.  Although perhaps a bit early to be hanging the stockings on the fireplace mantel, it is never too early to be prepared for fire safety.  In the winter months, many households have Christmas trees strung with lights, outdoor displays of lights and decorations requiring extension cords and outlets.  Chimneys are aflame with burning wood, giving the home that winter feel and smell that is welcome in the cold winter months.  But before all these activities commence, check and make sure you are prepared.  Is your chimney flue open and the chimney free of debris or any bird nests that may have been built over the previous summer?  Are your electrical cords and outlets in good shape and capable of handling the load you will be placing on them?  Is there a safety screen, or glass doors in front of your fireplace?  If a gas fireplace, has it been serviced and checked for leaks in the past several years? You can never be to cautious when it comes to fire safety.  Check and double check, to make sure you and your family are safe and can sleep soundly at night without the fear of fire.
