What could that mud puddle be telling you?

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly recently worked with a client that had a water and mold issue in their walk-out basement.  They couldn’t understand why they were getting a musty smell and then noticed the wet wall in the corner of the unfinished part of the basement.  Odd as it may sound, they told us that they could not have mold or a water issue because they had a walk-out basement and they specifically bought the house because of the lot running slightly downhill and having no underground rooms.  We totally understood what they were thinking but when we walked them around the perimeter of their house and pointed out the extensive mud puddles, they started to understand the problem.

Their home may not have been underground and the lot did slope away from the house, but the grading around the home was not properly executed.  There we low points around the two back corners of the home without proper drainage.  The areas had become saturated with rain and the ground had turned to mud.  Over time, this was enough to cause the issue they were now seeing inside their home.  SERVPRO of Fair Oaks-Centreville-Chantilly took care of the water and mold damage.  We also spoke with a landscaping professional and pointed out the need to improve the grading and drainage around the back of the home. Once this was complete, the homeowner was is good shape….and likely to stay dry and mold free.

So, if you see excessive mud or puddles around your house, take note and research why this is happening. If damage has occurred, call SERVPRO to come and remediate your water damage before it turns into not only a water issue but a mold problem as well.
